What are packing cubes?

In case you didn’t know, packing cubes are your suitcase’s best friends. Actually, maybe they’re your best friend when packing your bag. That’s more like it.

You can purchase them in various sizes and shapes. They’re typically made from a variety of lightweight, durable materials. The vast majority close with a zipper and are rectangular in shape. They’re also quite flexible as you can, again, either fold or roll them up.

You can use packing cubes to organize such things as the electronics you plan to take with you on your journeys, your cords, your camera gear, and more. However, they are primarily used for arranging your clothes before putting everything into your luggage.

Are packing cubes worth it?

Many people swear by them. The rationale for this has to do with the ability to literally organize everything before packing. When using packing cubes, there is no reason to rearrange your suitcase constantly. Since packing cubes come in multiple sizes and shapes, you can add or subtract as many as you need to properly arrange your things.

Moreover, since not all travel destinations are the same, your needs won’t be the same either. Investing in packing cubes gives you a range of options when it comes to packing your luggage that you wouldn’t have otherwise.

How do packing cubes save space?

Packing cubes can genuinely save you an immense amount of space. They do so in the following ways:

  • They have modular designs. Because they’re modular and come in varying sizes and shapes, you can mix and match them with ease. You can stack packing cubes horizontally or vertically to make the most of any space left in your luggage.
  • They help prevent overpacking. For instance, say you’re going on a long trip. You can use many different packing cubes and then fold or roll them up to fit everything inside your suitcase. On the other hand, say you’re going on a simple trip that lasts the weekend. You could use just one large packing cube. Easy peasy.
  • Packing cubes can be compressed so that they don’t take up much space. It’s easy to zip them up and then squish them down. Doing so will push air out of them, and they’ll physically be smaller.

How should you use packing cubes?

If you want to be as organized as possible when it comes to your packing and the use of packing cubes, follow this advice:

Organize things the same way you would organize them in your wardrobe or drawers. Put like items with like things. For example, put shoes together with shoes. Put underwear with socks. Put accessories together. Put gear in a separate bag of its own, and so on.

Pack according to what you plan to do on your trip. For instance, you could be going skiing. In that case, you could pack a cold-weather cube. Include sweaters and long-sleeved shirts. Arrange them as close together as you can. You could then stuff winter scarves and gloves into the same packing cube around the rows of neat outfits.

Remember that because packing cubes come in many different sizes and shapes, you can essentially use them as travel drawers. You can create cubes filled with different categories of items. Just to reiterate, you could:

  • Use compression packing cubes to put bulky items like big winter coats into your luggage (and save space while doing so).
  • Use packing cubes for t-shirts, jeans, and other light clothing.
  • Use a garment folder to put your dresses, dress shirts, and other more formal wear wrinkle-free.

The bottom line here is that packing cubes actually work, and are absolutely worth it. Once you give them a genuine try, you’ll discover why so many people use them religiously when traveling. The truth is, once you’ve packed your bag full of packing cubes, it will be the most organized suitcase you’ve ever taken with you anywhere!
