What Prime Day mattress sales to expect

Considering the types of discounts we have seen in the past, look for these brands to have generous sales of approximately 25% up to 50% off — with sales lasting about 48 hours: Of course, you won’t just see mattresses on sale for Prime Day. There will most certainly be sales on every type of bedding to go along with your mattress, too. Keep your eye out for bundles on all things cozy to make your new sleep setup complete.

How to choose a new mattress

It can be tricky to find the right mattress, especially with so many new brands on the scene and the terms being used to describe them. Take your time, don’t be pressured, and give yourself a chance to learn about your own sleep needs before you start shopping. Let’s break this into pieces:

Determine your sleeping position

The way you sleep helps determine the level of firmness you’ll need in a mattress. For example, people who sleep primarily on their side (called side sleepers) and weigh 130 pounds or less can benefit from a soft or extra soft mattress. For side sleepers weighing up to and over 200 pounds, a medium or firm mattress will feel more supportive. Stomach sleepers should stick with a firm and extra firm mattresses, lighter weights benefiting from the regular firmness levels while heavier weights work better with an extra firm. Finally, back sleepers can benefit from medium to medium-firm or extra firm levels, depending upon their weight. Those with a small build will want to stick with a medium mattress while larger people will feel better on a medium-firm or extra firm mattress.

Identify your personal sleep needs

There are now mattresses specifically made to help hot sleepers stay cool and alleviate soreness for those with back pain.  Check out mattresses with cooling properties like ventilation, superior breathability, moisture-wicking, and gel-infused memory foam to find some relief for hot sleepers. For back pain, look for as much as support as possible in a firm mattress. Athletes will want to check out innovative out brands like Airweave and Bear Mattress to evaluate some of the most beneficial mattresses for you.

Test it out if you can

Prime Day may have better deals online than in person, but with so many new stores getting into the sale frenzy, it may be hard to tell until you actually read about their sales. Some mattress-in-a-box brands have showrooms inside other stores now, or even some of their own shops opening, so you can easily try their goods out in person. For example, Casper has shops of their own, and select Target locations showcase some of their products as well. (Not all have mattresses, however, so you may want to call ahead to see if yours does before you make the trip.) Leesa partnered up with West Elm to showcase their mattresses, and Nectar has mattresses in some ABC Warehouses and US-Mattress locales, too. Some Mattress Firm stores carry Purple mattresses, and Avocado Green has their own shop in Hoboken, New Jersey. Look around to see if your favorite bed-in-a-box mattresses are being shown at a physical location near you to try them out.

Of course, one great thing about most bed-in-a-box brands is their generous sleep trials. In many ways, this is even better than being able to try the mattress out in the store before purchasing. With a sleep trial, upon receiving your mattress, you’ll likely have between 100 nights and a full year to try it out risk-free, which allows you to see how it feels once it has been “broken in” to the size and contours of your body. If you don’t love it, you can get a full refund (just make sure you keep your receipts and documentation).

Learn a little jargon: Safety certifications, standards, and labels

First of all, learn a little about mattresses, and what goes into making them. For example, many of today’s newer brands use terms like memory foam, latex, innerspring, or hybrid to describe their beds. Find out what each word means, what type of mattress appeals to you, and go from there.

If you’re looking at brands that feature eco-friendly materials or pride themselves on fair trade work policies, you may find a whole new world of terms and logos on their packaging. Here are just a few examples to give you an idea:

  • Certi-PUR certification is usually found on foam mattress packaging and means that the foam in the mattress is made without hazardous chemicals.
  • The GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) seal provides quality assurance of several key safety and environmental criteria.
  • MADE-SAFE certification means the product has been expert-screened for a number of components that can be dangerous to human health.

There are many more of these certifications and standards, but the good news is that they can each be easily researched online. If you are interested in a brand that features these types of components, consider familiarizing with all of these terms to help you evaluate and narrow down the best mattress deals for you.
