When are the best Prime Day luggage deals?

The quick answer to the question about when the best Prime Day Luggage Deals will fall is during the Prime Day sales. However, Amazon has shown a consistent practice of offering great deals leading up to Prime Day to (ahem) prime shoppers for the big event.

During the lead-in, however, if a deal lights up your panel, go for it. We’ve seen great deals on products in past years that didn’t last until Prime Day, so you can’t count on that gotta-have piece of luggage will be on sale or even available during Prime Day. Besides, if you buy ahead of the event and you see the same product cheaper, you can return the original purchase later and still score the better deal.

What Prime Day luggage deals to expect

Without any inside information on Prime Day 2020 deals and discounts, we can look at pricing patterns from previous Prime Day and other sales events to give you a general idea of what to expect. Amazon discounts various luggage brands and price points within the brands within a wide range, from no discount at all to 67% or more.

We took a look at representative luggage pieces from several brands and found that, during Prime Day 2019, for example, most luggage that was on sale — remember that not every product is included — was discounted between 45% and 55%. Samsonite, DaKine, Eagle Creek, and American Tourister brands, for example, fell into those discount ranges during Prime Day 2019 for the products we checked. Travel Pro’s discounts were closer to 20% to 25% off, and London Fog discounted some products by only 10%-15% and others by as much as 67%.

London Fog’s discount range during last year’s Prime Day sale brings up another possibility — older products. Amazon and brand manufacturers often use significant sales events to sell off older products, often with the most significant discounts. Many products, like luggage, don’t have model years, so an older model still performs like the newer editions, so if you see a crazy-low price, you might have a chance at Prime Day bragging rights for looking at the right screen at the right time.

Amazon also runs flash or lightning sales with limited times for extra discounts on specific products. Time is of the essence with limited-time sales, so it’s not a time to do a lot of research. Also, because sales with visible run-down clocks tend to build excitement, it’s possible some deals that show up won’t be all that unusual, which underscores the importance of doing your research ahead of time.

How to choose new luggage

Here are some main points to consider while you’re researching luggage ahead of Amazon Prime Day 2020. The tighter you define your needs and wants, even down to brand, model, color, and size, the more empowered you’ll be during this or any other sales event. We won’t mention price, because luggage is available in extreme price ranges – and the prices generally reflect overall materials and build quality and durability. So, know your price range, and consider these points:

Purpose

The reason you buy and the actual use you’ll put luggage to is likely the most significant determinant of overall quality and price. If you’re looking for a bag to schlep around from coffee shop, to work, and for weekend trips, you don’t need to get too fancy. Special purpose luggage for frequent air travels, urban e-scooter commuting, and long term cruises may not sell in as high quantities as more general-purpose pieces or luggage sets. It might cost a bit more, but purpose-built luggage can make a big difference in carrying comfort and convenience.

Size

Buying luggage that’s too small or, more frequently, too large for the way you’ll use it most of the time is an easy mistake. If you have vague plans for a multi-month trip and want to be sure you buy sufficiently large luggage, consider what it will be like trying to get on a short flight where you’d prefer to carry on your luggage but can’t or how awkward it could be to transport a huge bag everywhere you go. If you must buy luggage for that someday-in-the-future trip, try to save some funds for an everyday bag.

Ruggedness and durability

Quality luggage is built to withstand careless handling, whether by owners or attendants with various transportation modes. Assess the material (see below), the seams, the stitching (if there is any), and even the hardware. If you don’t know if you can assess luggage durability, look for user reviews before you buy.

Material and style

If your luggage is a fashion statement, then style, material, design, color, and so forth are personal choices. If you want to be sure a bag is waterproof, won’t show minor dirt or scratches, and will hold up over time, however, the material matters. Look for manufacturer statements about water resistance, material that shrugs off dust and grime, or, with hard surface luggage, scratch-resistance. Thick leather luggage often looks better with age and use; other materials look old and worn out, so pay attention to the material.

Security

Luggage security includes the ability to lock and protect bags from thieves, but the security also refers to protecting contents during travel. For example, if you’ll carry electronic devices, dedicated padded compartments can save you the cost of replacing damage that results from rough handling. Separate compartments for different types of contents can be convenient but also protective. Makeup or other personal products with loose tops,  leaky water bottles, used gym clothes, and yesterday’s socks and underwear can make you regret your luggage doesn’t have a way to keep things separate.

Should I shop on Prime Day or wait until Black Friday?

If you want to stock up on your luggage needs for when travel is safe again, it’s better to get shopping during Prime Day. Black Friday is placed only a month apart from Prime Day this year which means that if a bag you had your eye on sells out, you might not see a restock in time for Black Friday or Cyber Monday. You’ll also be competing with more buyers on Black Friday so there’s a strong chance you miss the deal you want or the heavy demand increases shipping delays. We also don’t predict discounts being bigger on Black Friday, so don’t worry about that. Get shopping with these Prime Day luggage deals early and prep for your next big trip with your family.
