How To Choose The Right Travel Luggage

Having the right luggage makes traveling less stressful. This is something you may not even be aware of — until you find yourself traveling with inadequate baggage. Getting anywhere can be a struggle with the wrong luggage, and this is a bad thing when trying to enjoy a vacation or make it on time to an out of town business meeting. The correct size, weight, features, and durability all factor into deciding which luggage is right for you.

The three main types of luggage are travel packs, travel duffels, and wheeled luggage. Where you are traveling to, how you’re getting there, and your plans are once you arrive all factor into deciding which type is right for you.

Wheeled Luggage

Obviously, luggage with wheels is the easiest type to transport through airports and down streets and sidewalks. There are all kinds of wheeled luggage — rolling suitcases, wheeled duffels, and wheeled backpacks. Rolling suitcases are what you see most often in airports, and they come in a range of sizes. There are hard-side and soft-side varieties and are typically rugged in design. This type of luggage is best for road trips, business travel, family visits, and travel to cities. Wheeled duffels are great for holding a lot of gear like sports equipment that is a wide variety of shapes and sizes. These are best for family trips, road trips, and adventure travelers. Wheeled packs are great because they offer the mobility of a backpack and the convenience of wheeled luggage. Backpacks are also great for areas of high traffic or lots of flights of stairs. Wheeled backpacks are best for adventure travel and road trips.

Travel Duffels

Travel duffels come with and without wheels and can be thrown over your shoulder or wheeled depending on the type. The main advantage of a duffel is the simple design — they are easy to use and typically have one large storage area. If you’re a fan of compartments to keep your clothes and gear separate, a duffel is not for you. Duffels come in a variety of sizes, from carry-on to checked sizes so you will be able to find one that suits your needs. Traditional duffels are best for adventure travelers and budget travelers when the convenience of wheels is not necessary. Places that are crowded and have uneven streets make wheels more trouble than they are worth.

Travel Packs

Travel-friendly backpacks are great for traveling to areas where wheeled luggage won’t do you any good: Stairs, gravel roads or walkways, and other uneven terrains. Travel backpacks have organization pockets, shoulder straps, lockable zippers, and other travel-friendly features. Travel packs are perfect for traveling light, adventure travelers, and going to places with uneven terrain.

Aside from the type of bag you choose, when picking your luggage be sure to consider the length of your stay, what kinds of activities you will do while you’re there, what type of packer you are (heavy or light), and all rules and regulations of any flight you are taking.
